I forgot to say I did a body image experiment years ago when I was a young mother. I decided to stop wearing makeup and see if I could feel okay. I did it for 6 months and happily felt just fine.

Then one day, I was walking through a mall with my teenage babysitter and I happened to look in the shop window and saw our two faces. I was shocked at how invisible I looked and said to myself, oh, well, I proved I could do it. That's enough of that.

I'm glad I did. And glad I don't feel the need to prove anything anymore!

Susan, this topic is one that can add to the complicated emotions some single women struggle with. In our society the emphasis on perfect bodies can contribute to their feeling their imperfect bodies are why they're single--their butts are too big, breasts too small, hair not curly enough/too straight. That something is wrong with them.

At SWWAN we are out to help single women with that attitude reframe their outlook and realize that life is not about how you look but about how you live in the world--with or without a man. How you share your joy and your creativity. How you contribute your talents and skills to make the world a better place. How you reach for and find the best in yourself to live your most empowered life.

Thanks for writing this blog for everyone whose self-esteem takes a header because of a poor body image.
